I’ve mentioned before how much I love the all-natutral fragrances by Pacifica. They’re delicious, inexpensive and have none of the toxic chemicals found in most perfumes. (Seriously - check out this article: http://planetgreen.discovery.com/fashion-beauty/avoid-secret-toxins-perfume.html )
For the next three days, everything on the site is 20% off! Just use code HOSTGIFT when you checkout. If you’re looking for holiday gifts, their candle/fragrance/lotion gift sets are adorable.

Three Under $30: Anthropologie Necklaces

Just heard that Redken is coming out with their own Wii game. No release date yet but I can’t wait to see how I stack up to my sister Carrie, who is a real-life stylist!

Here are the deets:

Redken’s Busy Scissors®, the new “life simulation” game allows consumers to perm, color, shampoo, cut, blow dry, and style hair!  Players earn reputation and advance their career in a Hollywood based salon by meeting the demands of their glamorous and eccentric clientele.  The game progresses as they help unlock each client’s inner potential by finding their unique outward style.  The game features over 25 hairstyles, 20 mini-games, 6 career levels, and 4 game modes, which provide a dynamic combination of realistic gameplay, humor, and entertainment.

Maybelline Dream Smooth Mousse: Pretty Orange for a White Girl

I tried Maybelline’s Dream Smooth Mousse foundation, and I give it a C-.

Color: I got the lightest color they make - Porcelain Ivory -  and it was still too dark by about a full shade. The tone was also warm, which is the opposite of what “porcelain” implies (cool pink/blue tone).

Texture: The texture was nice if a little goopy and shiny. The product did stay put for a decent amount of time.

Packaging: Bulky. The sponge applicator smells VERY funky and the two step process of opening the lid and then unscrewing the container was a bit annoying.

Cruelty: As I have said many times, Maybelline tests on animals. If you think that’s gross (and you should) kindly tell them to stop it HERE. There is NO NEED! And if there are any Maybelline PR peeps out there that want to talk to me about this, please email HeartsLikeStars@gmail.com. I’d love to hear from you.

How-To: 1970’s Hair at Cavalli

Photos by Matt Lever for Redken. P.S. I WANT THOSE FRINGE PANTS SO BAD

1970’s hairdos have been hot business on the Spring 2011 runways. Guido at Redken gave the models bone-straight groupie hair at Roberto Cavalli’s Spring 2011 show in Milan last week. To get the look you need just two products, totaling around $35. Here’s how it’s done:

Redken Products

-          align 12 protective straightening balm (A Redken Best Seller!)

-          vinyl glam 02 mega shine spray

Create the Look

-          Create a messy center part, wet hair and apply align 12.  Blow dry for stick straight strands that have added protection from heat and damage.

-          Run through hair with flat iron

-          Flat iron all hair together to the very ends

-          Finish with vinyl glam 02 for separation and shine.

Guido also added extensions to horizontal scalp braids to achieve this look. We’re assuming you’re not taking it that far. If you are, hit the salon!

I have to go to an awards gala in a couple of weeks with my company. The selection of evening gowns in the stores around me are pretty pitiful. I ended up buying three gowns from Nordstrom’s website and I’m hoping I like one of them when they arrive next week!
A friend sent me a link to RentTheRunway.com today and I totally wish I knew about this a few days ago when I was shopping for gowns! Rent The Runway lets you access your dream wardrobe for all of life’s special occasions at 90% off retail prices. Browse their selection, find a dress you like, order it, wear it, and then ship it back! They have a variety of evening gowns but also a ton of fun and flirty dresses! Seems like a great idea for those times when you just want one sassy dress but don’t want to spend hundreds of dollars for something you know you won’t wear again.

I’m turning 30 next Wednesday.
When I was 18 I thought by 30 I would be totally loaded. Much to my chagrin, I’m just loaded with margaritas or $6 champagne most of the time - which is totally fun but not conducive to a luxe wardrobe. Still, I feel that’s no excuse not to look cute.  Today I scored this faux-Vintage Babydoll Dress from Forever 21 for just $27.80. I plan to wear it to my birthday dinner, and probably spill cake on it, like the mature adult I am.

Studly Sam Edelman

I’m kind of obsessed with the “Mad Max”-esque studded footwear out this season. Most of these are pricy enough that I can only dream, but fun to lust after nonetheless.

Sam Edelman “Lorissa” - $200 at Footcandy.com

Sam Edelman “York” - $159-$199 at Amazon.com

Sam Edelman “Zoyla” - $184.75 at Endless.com

Sam Edelman “Yalene” - $274.95 at Nordstrom.com

Sam Edelman “Joss” - $143 - $180 at Amazon.com

So, Brit model Alexa Chung who used to have a super annoying MTV talk show that got cancelled now has a fashion line with Madewell.
Is it just me or are their clothes boring and overpriced? I never buy anything there, not cause I can’t afford it, but I don’t desire it either. Anyway - these clothes look relatively boring too. Prices are $48 - $259 (…and I bet the $48 is for like, a scarf.)
I do, however, like the Rosemary’s Baby dress and velvet shorties pictured above. So, whoever really designed this collection, nice work on those (‘cause I think we all know it wasn’t you Alexa…)
